Happy Mardi Gras! 1989: ‘I Am What I Am’
This month Australia celebrates the 40th anniversary of the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras.
The first one in 1978 ended in injuries and mass arrests when police attacked was had been a peaceful march. We’ve been through many things since then, not least the devastation wreaked by HIV/AIDS.
But, throughout it all, we’ve also known how to party – and none have been more spectacular than those of the Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras itself.
This video encapsulates for me exactly what has kept us going through the difficult years. Not just the party spirit but powerful songs like ‘I Am What I Am’. And drag in all its forms – not just the ‘real’ ones but others like (if I may) the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence – who have done their bit to entertain, support and raise funds for various causes.
Sadly, not all the performers in this video are with us today so let’s keep them in mind as we enjoy the show and the key message – ‘I Am What I Am’.
