1983. Gay Scene: Long Yang Club
The Long Yang club was established in London in 1983 in response to the absence of a safe and supportive social space for LGBT Asians and their friends. The group was named after Lord Long Yang – a gay character in the Chinese book of legends ‘Dream of Red Mansions’.
Since its inception in the 80s it has expanded to a network of some 35 groups in nine different countries.
I am interested in the Long Yang Club in the USA. There used to be one here in San Antonio, TX (USA) in which I was once a member. However, I cannot find same anymore. Is there an international LYC? Is there one in Texas?
Thank you!
The International Long Yang Club organisation no longer operates.
Most of the Long Yang Clubs have either closed down or merged with Asians & Friends Groups. BUT there is still a Long Yang Club operating in New Jersey (www.lycnj.com/). Outside of the USA there is still a Long Yang Club in Paris France (https://centrelgbtparis.org/long-yang-club-paris) and also a Long Yang Club in Sydney Australia (https://longyangsydney.com/).
In September this year 2018 there will be an IFCON Weekend Event for Long Yang and Asian & Friends Clubs in Palm Springs where you might be able to get more up-to-date information (https://ifcon2018.org/)
Unfortunately there is still a lot of out-of-date Long Yang website material to be found on the Internet including the original Long Yang Club International domain name (longyangclub.org) owned now by a private person.
Many gay Asian groups no longer have websites, but rely on Social Media such as Facebook.
I hope the above information helps you.
Many Thanks for this update George. Much appreciated. Colin

LYC London is still going strong – now as a social LGBT badminton club. Our average weekly attendance in Q1 of 2019 was 61.
Last year we celebrated 35 years since Long Yang Club began, with events, an exhibition and a big party.
