1982. Politics: Campaign for Homosexual Equality’s Charter of Lesbian and Gay Rights
In 1982, the National Conference of the UK’s Campaign for Homosexual Equality unanimously endorsed a Charter of Lesbian and Gay Rights.
The Charter read:
Homosexual equality demands the acknowledgement that homosexuality is a valid form of sexual expression. that lesbians and gay men have the right to life-styles free from social and legal discrimination and that gay people make a contribution to society equal in value to that of heterosexuals.
This requires:
- The elimination of sexism, racism and ageism in all their forms.
- The positive representation in education and the media of homosexuality and the lives of gay people
- The promotion of gay pride and of mutual support within the gay movement
We demand:
- The right to basic human freedoms: of opinion, of expression, of assembly, of movement, of residence.
- General equality in criminal law for gay people and heterosexuals and equal application of the law.
- That consensual sexual acts should not be the concern of the criminal law.
- The right to have, raise and care for children.
- The securing of freedom for lesbians and gay men from all forms of violence and intimidation – at work, at home, on the streets.
- Freedom from interference in our private lives.
- The end to discriminatory harassment, questioning, arrest, detention or deportation of gay people.
- The equal right of employment and the protection of that employment.
- Equal access to all public services.
- That gay people should receive equal treatment with heterosexuals in all aspects of the civil law.
