1984. Media: Norman Gunston tries to interview Boy George
For the uninitiated, ‘Norman Gunston’ is a character created by Australian actor and comedian Garry McDonald.
Gunston made his first television appearance in the early 70s, on Australia’s ‘Aunty Jack Show’ (the eponymous ‘Aunty Jack’ being a large gravel-voiced, bearded man in a frock!) He then went on to host his own television chat show, where he used his character’s apparent incompetence to great subversive effect: many were the celebrity egos that came unstuck in Gunston’s interview chair.
Sadly, by the mid- 80s McDonald/Gunston seemed to fall from fame. Perhaps desperate to revive his fortunes, McDonald reprised Gunston on the early evening ‘Mike Willesee Show’ – a lightweight ‘current affairs’ programme. Sadly, his encounter with Boy George served only to demonstrate just how far he had fallen and just what he was prepared to do to get a job. In this interview Gunston tries (and fails) to milk George’s ‘gender-bender’ image for all its worth, including the particularly sad, “Are you a pooftah?”
It’s very clear to see who came off the worst.
