1983. Movie: Privates on Parade
A little humour for the holiday season.
Privates on Parade is a little like Monty Python meets It Ain’t Half Hot Mum, although the camp humour is much more intelligent in Privates than it ever was in It Ain’t Half Hot…
Set in an Army Entertainments Unit in Malaysia in 1948, the film follows the adventures of a motley crew of servicemen. Most of them have little interest in the conflict – and quite a few of them are gay and more interested in frocking up.
John Cleese plays Major Giles Flack with his usual manic intensity, whilst Denis Quilley plays Captain Terri Dennis, the flamboyant leader of the Entertainments Unit. It’s not all camp comedy; there are some dark elements throughout the film. But, for now, enjoy a few of the lighter highlights in the following promotional clip. “No perfume on guard duty; no drag on sentry duty!”
