1987. Transgenders hit Australian day-time television
The Ray Martin Midday Show was the epitome of white, middle-class conservatism – as can be seen by the audience members.
For some reason he decided to have 36-year old transsexual Trixie Laumonte as a guest – and it quickly becomes apparent that he’s out of his depth.
He responds with an adolescent smirk when Trixie tells him he’s got a large gay following and never really knows how to handle Trixie being so upfront. There’s a particularly funny example of mutual misunderstanding:
“Did you ever feel like a girl when you were a young boy?” asks Ray.
“I had a few girls when I was a young boy”, replies Trixie.
And Ray is so much on tenterhooks he fails to take in the details when Trixie tells him three pubs are having “Ray Martin Lunches” that day. One of them is a lesbian pub, the others are largely for gay men.
So, at the end of the sequence, Ray does another coy smirk at the camera and says, “And to all those girls in the three pubs – have a nice lunch.”
TRIXIE WAS MY MATE BACK IN THE DAY AND I PRAY SHE IS WELL
