Blue Monday wasn’t one of your usual ‘high energy’  tracks but it was, from memory, still a very popular dance track in gay clubs. I certainly remember hearing it a lot on the Manchester scene in 1983 (which probably isn’t surprising since Manchester was the band’s home town).

Interesting to see the original video, which seems to reflect our pre-occupation with war in 1983. The Falkands/Malvinas conflict had ended the previous year and there was still a strong campaign against the siting of US nuclear weapons on British soil. There was a lot to be blue about in those days!
