1981. Movie: Polyester
In a career spanning some decades, John Waters works seem to have moved from the utterly outlandish (for example 1972’s Pink Flamingos) to the outer margins of mainstream (Hairspray 1988).
Polyester, shot in 1981, suggests a slight movement towards the mainstream – although only inasmuch as it has some sort of cohesive storyline.
This covers the tale of an unhappy housewife (played by Divine), her abusive husband and their two dysfunctional children. Throw in a variety of characters who all seem to be out to get Divine (including her mother, her husband’s secretary and 60’s screen idol Tab Hunter) and its weirdness from the word go.
Cinema goers also had the added bonus of watching the movie in ‘Odorama’. The audience was given ‘scratch-and-sniff’ cards as they went in, then at various points in the movie different numbers flashed up on screen to tell them which dot to scratch.
There is a happy ending of sorts. Or does it just seem like that because all the insanity finally stops?
