1980. Music: Diana Ross. I’m Coming Out
Diana Ross coming out? A black, Jewish lesbian? As radical as this may seem, I think we can safely discount it.
I’m not really sure what this song is about; Diana’s obviously ‘coming out’ of something (she says it often enough) but I don’t think it’s the closet! And, I’m guessing, neither did the powers that be in the TV and Radio industry.
Unlike Frankie Goes to Hollywood’s Relax – which was banned on the basis of one extremely ambiguous line, “when you want to come” – ‘Miss Ross’ remained uncensored. And yet – particularly when compared with Relax – there’s lots of sexual innuendo in this one. When she’s not repeatedly telling the world she’s coming out, she just keeps saying “I’m coming”!
Good for her – whatever it means!
She was coming out and showing her pride and also coming out of her group she was in with suprenos with Motown records and going solo
Yea, I just had to b ready for this one,and I was. It is a very upright, uplifting and straight to the point for me. She’s coming out, with all that she’s bringing- all her Looks, beauty, personality, positivityand love out to the world Tables to see, Shes ready to come and already came. That feels good and sounds-HOT!!!
