Was she or was she not Thelma Houston’s niece? Some say ‘yes’; Thelma Houston, apparently, says ‘no’. Was Aretha Franklin her godmother? Some say ‘yes’, some say ‘no’.
Was she gay? The verdict remains unclear on that one. If she was, then it would appear she put a lot of effort into concealing it: which is particularly ironic given the lyrics of this song.

As of 2020, a former friend and employee of Ms. Houston has spoken out and says that she and Whitney were in a relationship together which Whitney was forced to end because her singing career was becoming successful. The interview is available on the Guardian website.
