1980. Movie: Can’t Stop the Music
This extraordinary vehicle for the hits of the Village People was panned mercilessly on it’s release (“Please Stop the Music!”). Even today it’s seen as a milestone in the death of Disco.
As the following clip shows, it was indeed remarkably cheesy with a somewhat convoluted and superficial storyline. If it has any saving grace (apart from the aforementioned Village People hits), it’s its frequent reliance on the exposure of male flesh. Trousers are removed, shirts are ripped off and a line-up of toned swimmers perform a Busby-Berkeley style routine in a pool.
But the real high spot is the crowded locker room at the YMCA where various athletic men strip off to the strains of the VP’s eponymous hit. It’s not included in the following clip but, by all accounts, the scene includes some gratuitous full-frontal male nudity.
Can’t understand how the Village People ever acquired a reputation as a gay band!
