Were they? Weren’t they?
Pet Shop Boys’ Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe remained coy about their sexuality, even with a string of ‘gay-oriented’ songs like Young Offender, It’s a Sin, and their cover of the Village People’s Go West. And then there was their association with an endless string of gays or gay icons from Elton John, Derek Jarman and Dusty Springfield to Kylie and Madonna.
Neil Tennant finally came out in 1994, but Chris Lowe has remained circumspect. Will we ever know? Do we really care?
West End Girls was their first single, reaching Number One in the UK, USA and Canada. This video is also an illustration of some of the dismal fashion sense of those days!
