It’s probably all down to a certain George Alan O’Dowd that the term ‘gender bender’ entered our lives. For it was he who outraged parents and prompted a million headlines around the world when he fronted Culture Club as the sexually ambiguous ‘Boy’ George.

Unsurprisingly, gutter Press like The Sun posted their usual headlines, which either feigned shock at the imminent collapse of civilisation or sniped at George’s sexuality. And George was completely unphased and milked it for all it was worth!

Apparently Culture Club only managed to get their first appearance on the UK’s Top of the Pops after ‘Shakin’ Stevens’ pulled out at the last minute. Well, I suppose that’s one reason for liking him!
