1985. Film: Kiss of the Spider Woman
In what was considered a somewhat risque career choice back in 1985, William Hurt played a gay Brazilian man who’s imprisoned for sex with an underage boy.
Through no fault of his own, his character – Luis Molina – is presented as effeminate, shallow and politically naive. Yes, that tiresome stereotyping of us faggots.
As if you emphasise the point even further, his cell mate – Valentin Arregui – is a red-blooded, left-wing, heterosexual revolutionary, dedicated to the fight for social justice.
Thankfully, as the movie progresses Valentin lowers his macho defences a little to show a tiny bit of sensitivity. And, at the same time, Luis develops a little bit of political awareness and the two begin to fall for each other. This culminates in a display of hot physicality the night before Luis is released.
But, of course, this isn’t a real fairy story, so there’s no ‘happily ever after’ for either of them. Each man makes his own final gesture of moral principle, only to have the dark forces that rule the country take a nasty revenge.
