1980. Book: The Playbook for Kids About Sex
There are some people who feel that adults should be open and honest with children when they ask about sex. And there are some people who don’t.
And then there’s former Conservative MP Jill Knight. She was one of the key players in the introduction of Britain’s notorious Clause 28, which prohibited local authorities from ‘promoting homosexuality’.
She used The Playbook for Kids about Sex to support her arguments for this memorable piece of homophobic legislation.
The Playbook, she declared, contained “brightly coloured pictures of little stick men [that] showed all about homosexuality and how it was done.” Obviously, the notion that little stick men can convey ‘how homosexuality is done’ is absurd to anyone with even half a brain. But it’s clearly meant to imply that these pictures were explicit. (The little men are, presumably, making good use of their little sticks!).
Bearing that in mind, I feel the need to forewarn you that one of the main ‘gay’ illustrations is posted below. Brace yourselves!
Although what’s really shocking is that such scandalous legislation was driven through Parliament on the basis of such blatant untruths.
