1981. June 5th – First notification
On June 5th 1981, the US Centers for Disease Control published the first official notification of five cases of Pneumocystis Carinii pneumonia (PCP) in previously healthy young gay men, two of whom had died.
Up until that time PCP had not usually affected younger people and the effects were rarely fatal. The cause was unknown and the condition was yet to be given a name.
