Sylvester was a bit of a disco pioneer, as well as being a high-profile drag performer. In consequence, he was one of the first people to be known as the ‘queen of disco’ – a title that was subsequently applied to Gloria Gaynor and Donna Summer (who managed to really get the gay community offside with some seriously offensive comments about people with AIDS. More of that in another post).
